Discover the inspiring journey of the Watton Carers Group, from our humble beginnings to becoming a cornerstone of support in the City of Wyndham.

Our History

Explore the key milestones that have shaped the Watton Carers Group since its inception in 2014.

2014

Founding of Watton Carers Group

In 2014, a small group of dedicated individuals came together to form the Watton Carers Group, aiming to provide much-needed support to carers in the community.

2016

First Community Workshop

We held our first community workshop, offering resources and training to help carers manage their responsibilities more effectively.

2018

Expansion to New Venue

Due to growing membership, we moved to a larger venue to accommodate our expanding programs and activities.

2020

Adapting to Covid-19

The pandemic posed significant challenges, but we quickly adapted by offering virtual support meetings and online resources to continue our mission.

A community Carer Support Group in the City of Wyndham Since 2014

Around 2014 Janelle Faulkner from Carers Victoria supported Priscilla, Jean, Flora, Roni and Patricia in their caring roles of a loved one. Janelle suggested we meet for a cuppa and chat in one of the local cafes. Doing this helped us to realize that we were not alone in our journeys hearing each other’s stories. As before this we all felt alone and isolated. From this she encouraged us to start a carer support group and register with Carers Victoria. So we did and look what happened!

We started the process and agreed on a name which is the Watton Group (after the café where we met regularly for a chat). Priscilla was the Co-Ordinator with Roni and Patricia as Secretaries. We began having monthly meetings at the Café now having 8 members with Ilonka, Heather and Helena joining the group, which was exciting. Sadly we said goodbye to Roni as she went back to live in New Zealand.

We said goodbye forever to our lovely Flora who passed away suddenly. Also, to our much missed Sari for her contribution to the group in many ways. Sari relocated to Perth to be near her family.

The management of the Watton Café changed and it is now called the Social Sutra.

As our membership grew we needed to find a new venue to hold our meetings; and then Patricia met a lady in the Café and in this conversation she found out about the Eco-Living Centre. Guess what happened since then we now have a local community centre which we use for meetings and workshops. The best part is we could do this with a donation.

We have attended many workshops that Carers Victoria staff have organized for us; like Facilitator Training, Aged Care and Be Connected to build our knowledge that would help us access services and relevant information.

Most of our members also attended support programs for carers through other organisations. This was when we met the wonderful coordinators like Yonas & Suli from Wellways and Cath & Janine from MIND Williamstown. We enjoyed many unforgettable overnight and day trips along with lunches and art and craft workshops.

Priscilla and Patricia were invited to Carers Victoria 25th Anniversary at Government House which was very special.

We got funding from Carers Victoria and Wyndham City Council for different events to promote awareness of mental health in the local community. We invited the then Mayor of our Council and a popular and longtime Counsellor, Heather Marcus. We also started enjoying overnight respite trips from funding that Carers Victoria granted to carer support groups on a yearly basis.

We enjoyed celebrating end of year and Christmas lunches by having raffles with prizes donated by members and local businesses. Thanks to our Events Co-Ordinator’s, Priscilla and Mena for organizing these social events to get together and have fun.

For the last three years, during Seniors Festival in October we enjoyed walks along Werribee River and the Boardwalk, Wyndham Harbor followed by brunch in a café. This year we were successful to get another grant to celebrate Seniors Festival playing barefoot bowls @The Hive at Werribee Bowling Club. Thanks to the Club and Wyndham City Council.

In September 2018 Priscilla announced she was stepping down from her role as Facilitator. It felt sad but we thanked her for the wonderful role she had played in starting this group. She is now contributing so much in her role as Events Coordinator. Sari was nominated but decided not to accept so Patricia stepped in to fill the role.

With members contributing their time and energy we raised funds setting up a market stall at the Italian Sports Club in Werribee. Thanks to Mena and Priscilla for coordinating this: Mena with her craft and organizing skills helped this to be very successful.

Then came Covid-19 into Australia and life changed in so many ways affecting everyone. Fortunately, our Group was offered online support using zoom to connect from Carers Victoria. We connected online every month for meetings and trivia and with Helen Carr’s support were able to move forward as our membership more than doubled from 10 to 22. Helen is a member of the Education Section, Carers Victoria and her mentoring of the group and me were so appreciated and enjoyable.

Priscilla and Patricia were invited to do a video from the playlist Conversations with Carers Victoria as leaders of a support group to find out how and why being part of a safe and supportive group can ensure you stay connected with your community and bring benefits to your caring role. They felt both nervous and excited but special at the same time.

In 2019 we applied for a health condition support grant from the Department of Health which was successful. We were able to have an introduction to meditation, meditation teacher training, sessions with a wellness coach, get boost for our Facebook page and buy a laser printer and books.

We were able in between lockdown restrictions to have a few face to face meetings – which helped with not feeling isolated.

We were fortunate to meet Sue Peden, Acting CEO, and Michael Stanley, Senior Manager, Community Engagement from Carers Victoria as well as Anita Craige, Carer Engagement Co-Ordinator, Carer Gateway to discuss our concerns regarding what was not working for us in our caring roles. We also advocated for more funding for new members so we could all enjoy overnight respite.

Getting this made it possible to go on a wonderful 2-day coach tour to travel to Castlemaine, Maldon, Daylesford and Trentham. This was enjoyed by 18 members of the group and was a great opportunity to mingle and meet new members.

The ups and downs during the period of Covid-19 have highlighted the fact that having ongoing connections and support make it easier to keep going with faith and hope.

Having good contacts and relationships with people in the organisations that support carers is important. In the early days people like Wendy Ayzit from Carers Victoria who has now moved to Tandem Carers; and now Amanda Burns from Wyndham City Council and Alyce Vella from the Department of Health has been a positive experience.

Our current membership is:
